Description:

by Jessica O'Leary

View of the courtyard in front of the Jokhang (jo khang), likely taken from the roof of the Doring (rdo ring) house during the Casting out the Votive Offering for the Great Prayer (smon lam gtor rgyag) on the 24th day of the first Tibetan month. The four proctors (zhal ngo) from Drepung ('bras spungs) monastery sit on a bench against the north wall of the couryard. Above and to their left is the Zurchong room, where the Dalai Lama would watch the proceedings; to the south, laypeople and monks prostrate in his direction. Members of the Kashak (bka' shag) are seated on the verandah of the reception room, the Khamsum Tsomchen (khams gsum tshoms chen), on the west-facing porch.
