Attending festivities at Sungchöra (gsung chos ra) square, located on the south side of the Jokhang (jo khang), on 4th March 1921. Crowds have gathered to attend the sports and race competitions at the "Invitation to Maitreya" festival, or Jampa Dendren (byams pa gdan 'dren), which took place on the 25th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar. The dais from which the Dalai Lama (tA la'i bla ma) would preach on the 15th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar is visible in the background. An incense burner, or sangkhung (bsang khung), can be seen in the center of the image.
